Is hay fever giving you the summer blues? The pollen count seems high right now and some of the team at Love Taste HQ are suffering with seasonal sniffles, sneezing, itchy eyes and drowsiness.
While anti-histamine sprays and tablets can really help we thought we’d take a look at what natural foods might help to ease or worsen the symptoms. So if hay fever is spoiling your summer fun here are some foods you could try:
- Honey – some believe eating local honey can help ease the itchy eyes and sniffles. Apparently the pollen in the honey helps your body desensitise from pollens in the air
- Onions – they’re full of quercetin, a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory
- Oily fish and seeds – Fish such as tuna, salmon and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, as are seeds like chia and flax. Omega-3 acids reduce inflammation, which is why they are such an important addition to your diet
- Vitamin C – a natural antihistamine and immune system booster - found in broccoli, kiwi, blueberries, tomatoes and apples
- Turmeric – an anti-inflammatory as well as a natural suppressor of histamine, this super food is a great one to have in your healthy store cupboard
- Garlic – garlic acts as a natural decongestant and allergy fighter – best eaten raw!!
- Pineapple – contains bromelain which can reduce irritation
- Water – drinks lots to help the histamines flush out of the body.
There are also some foods that are best to avoid as they can trigger histamine release. They include alcohol, caffeine, and dairy products, chocolate (sorry about that), peanuts, sugar and wheat.
