Why is Turmeric So Good?
Turmeric is one of the most popular health trends out there at the moment and it’s in everything from lattes to capsules – it’s even in face creams! We’ve all heard it’s good for us – but what does it actually DO?
Turmeric is an Indian spice and a member of the ginger family. In its original form it looks like this….
Active Ingredients in Turmeric
Its active ingredient is curcumin and this magic compound gives turmeric its superpowers. Curcumin is an anti-oxidant hence its main claim to fame - as an anti-inflammatory. Curcumin can help reduce inflammation so it can ease arthritis, skin flare-ups such as eczema and inflammatory bowel disease. Studies on people with Rheumatoid Arthritis showed that curcumin helped reduce joint tenderness and swelling better than a prescription anti-inflammatory.
In the Indian healing system Ayurveda turmeric is used for healing wounds and for easing respiratory problems and skin eruptions. This is because it has natural antiseptic properties.
